1826 $5 MS61 NGC....
Desirable Mint State 1826 Half Eagle1826 $5 MS61 NGC. Of the twenty or so pieces known of this date, most are found in Uncirculated condition. The surviving coins were likely held aside as bank reserves from the time of issue, and somehow escaped the melting pots that otherwise eradicated virtually the entire mintage of 18,069 pieces. It is believed that approximately two to three dozen pieces exist of this date. Most are fairly well struck and show the curls on Liberty and the complex folded cap clearly. The reverse is similarly well defined with the scroll and the eagle generally sharp. These early half eagles are true American classics. They have been widely collected since the 1870s and are considered one of the most difficult collections to complete.
Purchased from Abner Kreisberg Corporation on June 21, 1983 for $15,000.
