Description

AU58+ 1827 Half Eagle
Only 14 Pieces Certified by PCGS

1827 $5 AU58+ PCGS. CAC. Breen-6486, BD-1, High R.5. The sole die marriage for this rare date. The reported mintage was 24,913 pieces, but most of the issue was exported and melted. The Bass-Dannreuther reference estimates only 35 to 45 examples are known. PCGS has certified 14 pieces in all grades, some of which may be represent duplicate submissions. The present coin is crisply struck aside from blending at the top of the shield. The apricot-gold toning is original, and consequential marks are confined to a few unobtrusive abrasions on the portrait near the jaw. Remaining luster is prevalent throughout the reverse border and on the eagle, scroll, cap, and hair. A ring of luster outlines individual stars. A desirable example of a seldom-encountered date.
