Select 1832 13 Stars Half Eagle, Rare Miller-164 Variety

1832 $5 13 Stars MS 63 NGC. Miller-164, High R.7. This variety was unknown to Breen. The 1832 is a significant rarity in all grades despite an original mintage of 157,487 pieces. Most examples of this date did not survive the widespread meltings of the 1830s, and estimates of survivors are in the range of 25-35 coins. The Philadelphia Mint used two obverse and two reverse dies to produce this issue, and there are four known varieties. Both of the obverse dies are distinct, the first displays 12 stars around the periphery, the second has 13 stars. There are only six 1832 12 Stars half eagles extant. Prior to Bowers and Merena's sale of the Norweb Collection on October 12-13, 1987, there was only one known die marriage of the 1832 13 Stars half eagle: B. 2, Miller-165. Lot 782 in that sale, however, offered a 13 Stars example with the reverse die of one of the 12 Stars varieties (B. 1, Miller-162). Between the time of that discovery and the publication of Robert W. Miller's book United States Half Eagle Gold Coins: 1795-1834 (1997), three more examples of this new die marriage were confirmed. This variety is now known as Miller-164.
We do not know whether or not the present specimen is one of the four examples of this rare 13 Stars variety known to Miller. We do know, however, that the present coin is distinct from the Norweb discovery piece. Green-gold in color, the surfaces are bright with considerable satin luster adhering to both sides. The strike is far from complete, but the focal features display suitable definition. Lightly abraded for the grade, this Select survivor is one of the most significant early half eagles that we are offering in this important sale.
