1796 $2 1/2 STARS
Rare 1796 Quarter Eagle with Stars, AU 50 PCGS1796 Stars AU 50 PCGS. We are pleased to offer this very rare, first year issue from the quarter eagle denomination. There were two types minted in 1796: No Stars and Stars on the obverse. Of the two types, the No Stars is the more valuable as a one-year type, but the Stars type is considerably rarer.
Only 432 pieces were struck of the Stars type and estimates of survivors range from as few as 20-25 coins (Akers) to a high of 30 (Breen). Virtually all are in the VF-XF grade range, most show central striking weakness, and adjustment marks are prevalent. This piece shows softness at the base of the reverse with some typical adjustment marks, but on the obverse, no marks are noted and the hair is only softly defined behind the ear. The surfaces are bright and there is a semi-reflective quality about the coin. Overall, this is a nice, high grade example of this very rare quarter eagle. (NGC ID# 25F3, PCGS# 7647)
