Description:
Lightly Circulated 1802/1 Quarter Eagle
1802/1 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6118, BD-2, High R.5. The rarest of three die marriages for the year. The ES in STATES is widely spaced, and the upright of the E is centered between a pair of clouds. The eagle's lower beak is extended due to a minor engraving blunder. Ample satin luster emerges when this pale-gold example is rotated beneath a light. The centers show some softness of strike, as usual for this early gold type. Light friction on the obverse highpoints prevents a Mint State grade. A small planchet flaw (as made) beneath the chin will identify the present piece. While all 1802 quarter eagles are traditionally referred to as overdates, no examples are known that display an irrefutable underdigit, and many numismatists regard the final digit as merely repunched. Despite a stingy mintage of 3,035 pieces, three die marriages are known for the 1802, all of which share a common obverse.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)
