Description:

1802 Quarter Eagle, AU58
Popular Spike Shield, BD-1 Variety

1802 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. CAC. BD-1, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. A small mintage of 3,035 Capped Bust Right quarter eagles was achieved in 1802, with three die varieties known for the date. The same obverse die was used for all three varieties and it shows a minor imperfection under the final digit of the date that was mistaken for a 1 for many years, causing this issue to be listed as an overdate in many publications. Most present-day numismatists agree that this quarter eagle is not an overdate, and it is no longer listed as such in the Guide Book, but PCGS still lists the issue as 1802/"1". The reverse die is the famous Spike Shield variety that was also used to coin the JR-3 1802 dimes and the JR-2 1803 dimes. Probably no more than 90-120 examples of the BD-1 1802 quarter eagle survive today in all grades.

This impressive near-Mint example displays well-detailed design elements with just a trace of wear on the high points of the devices. The pleasing yellow and greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster and show only minor abrasions, although some planchet adjustment marks are evident on the central reverse. Census: 21 in 58, 26 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F6, PCGS# 7650)
