Description:
1804 Quarter Eagle, 14 Star Reverse
BD-2, AU50 Details
1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. AU50 Details. Ex: ANS. Breen-6119, BD-2, R.4. The 14 reverse stars are arranged in two arcing rows of six, plus two single stars flanking the eagle. This is one of the quarter eagle issues whose reverse was also used to strike silver dimes, in this case the 1804 JR-2. The present piece shows rim damage above IBE, above star 6, and between stars 11 and 12 on the obverse. Some of the denticulation is faint, on the obverse from 7 to 10 o'clock, and around much of the reverse. The noted cleaning is not overly harsh, but has left a few scattered hairlines and a somewhat bright appearance. Minor adjustment marks are noted at ED on the reverse. Despite the minor problems, much appeal remains on this historic piece.
Ex: B. Peyton; American Numismatic Society; Stack's ANS (1/2007), lot 2010, which realized $10,350.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F8, PCGS# 7652)
