1807 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU531807 $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. BD-1, R.3. The mintages of quarter eagles at the early Mint were sporadic to desultory at best, and for many years the mintages were so low that only a single die pair, and sometimes a single die state, are known. The 1807 quarter eagles are a case in point, a recorded 6,812 coins (perhaps not all dated 1807) struck from a single die pair; the reverse was a holdover from a die first used in 1805 for the BD-1. No obvious die cracks appear on either side of this lightly circulated AU53 NGC example. Some planchet adjustment marks appear in the central obverse through the Liberty design and at the left-side denticles, although strike unevenness has also weakened the rims from about 10:30 to 3:30 on the obverse. The golden-yellow surfaces show some tinges of deeper lilac around the date area. Moderate strike weakness also appears through the central reverse and at portions of the denticles.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FC, PCGS# 7656)
