Classic 1808 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle AU551808 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Bass-3017, Breen-6125, R.4. The only known dies. Among the classic coin designs of 19th century America, John Reich's Capped Bust motif stands out as a perennial favorite among collectors and numismatic scholars alike. Although this representation has gained its widest recognition on the lettered edge Half Dollars of 1807-1836, Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson also instructed the Bavarian-born engraver to prepare similar dies for the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle. Minted only in 1808, Reich's Capped Bust Quarter Eagle is perhaps the single most desirable issue of the entire denomination. From the original delivery of 2,710 pieces that emerged from the Philadelphia Mint on February 26, perhaps less than 150 survive in any condition.
Both sides of this minimally circulated representative display a soft, frosted sheen and appealing yellow-gold color. The borders are the most appreciably deficient area of strike, as is characteristic, and a cluster of short adjustment marks are seen between 4 and 5 o'clock on the reverse. An outstanding, conservatively graded example of this coveted classic in American numismatics. Population: 7 in 55, 29 finer (11/04).
