Description

Important Uncirculated 1808 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle

1808 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. The 1808 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle, one of a mere 2,710 pieces minted, is needed by the modest number of date collectors of United States gold, but enjoys even heavier demand as a one-year type coin. Most survivors fall under the VF to AU grade range, and the number of true Uncirculated pieces whittles down to perhaps a dozen pieces. On this coin the centers are strongly struck with finely detailed hair curls and full plumage on the eagle. As always, the borders are weak. Apparently this is a die flaw inherent in the design of the coin and may well have contributed to the early demise of the denomination in this year. Several of the peripheral stars on the obverse show radial definition but most are flat. Several short pinscratches contribute to the modest Mint State rating, the most noticeable of which appears at the tip of the bust. Overall, one of the nicest examples of this major Quarter Eagle scarcity we have ever offered. Population: 3 in 61, 3 finer (6/01). (NGC ID# 25FD, PCGS# 7660)
