Description

Near-Mint 1821 Quarter Eagle, BD-1
Rare and Seldom-Offered Issue

1821 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. BD-1, R.5. The 1821 quarter eagle is a seldom-offered issue that is rare regardless of condition and in spite of a seemingly healthy reported mintage of 6,448 pieces. It had been 13 years since new dies were created for the quarter eagle denomination -- the 1808 quarter eagle is one of the most infamous type-coin rarities in any U.S. series -- and 13 years after the 1821, the reweighting of U.S. gold coinage led to a mass melting of the pre-1834 issues.

Only one set of dies was created for the 1821 quarter eagle issue, which featured a modified capped bust of Liberty on the obverse; this 1821-dated obverse later was punched over with a 4 for the next quarter eagle issue. This scarcely worn example is bright and pale with distinctly green elements enhancing radiant straw-gold surfaces. A rim nick is noted at 3 o'clock on the obverse.

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
