Description

Conditionally Rare 1825 Two and a Half
BD-2, MS61

1825 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Breen-6128, BD-2, High R.4. Three die marriages are known for the 1825 quarter eagles. Bass-Dannreuther call the three varieties BD-1 through BD-3 the Thin Top 5, Distant Fraction; Recut 5, Distant Fraction; and the Recut 5, Close Fraction, which does an admirable job of summing up the die marriages and key attributes of each. The BD-2 at High R.4 is by far the most available of the three, as the BD-1 and BD-3 are each rated High R.6.
The present Mint State piece is nonetheless conditionally quite rare. NGC has certified 12 submissions at the MS61 grade level, with seven finer (1/11). It displays bright, semiprooflike fields with sharply struck surfaces throughout, including on the hair curls. The prevailing coloration is light orange-gold. Numerous small abrasions account for the grade, but the only mentionable one is a scratch near the denticles between stars 8 and 9. We also note a planchet void above star 2. Light planchet adjustment marks appear over the denticles on right side of reverse.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FG, PCGS# 7664)
