Description

Attractive 1825 Quarter Eagle, MS61
Capped Bust Left, BD-2

1825 $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6128, BD-2, High R.4. There are three known varieties of 1825 quarter eagles, unusually high for a date with a mintage of just 4,434 coins. The present coin is an example of the most available variety, the BD-2. The BD-2 obverse is characterized by the recut 5 in the date, and the reverse has the stem ending over the upright of the D. On this specimen both dies appear to be perfect, with no die cracks or clash marks. Approximately 80 to 100 examples still exist in all grades, with only about a dozen that grade MS60 or finer, including this piece.
Housed in a green-label PCGS holder, this brilliant and reflective piece has limited surface marks and presents excellent eye appeal. The details are well defined, and there is no evidence of weakness on either side. Proof or specimen examples were coined from this die pair. For example, the Mint Cabinet coin in the Smithsonian Institution, is one such. Its photo appears in the Garrett-Guth gold reference, although the authors there call it a "prooflike MS-66 that appears to have been produced under special circumstances." Those struck immediately after the proofs/specimen strikes were most likely to have reflective, mirrored obverse and reverse surfaces. For the date, Population: 10 in 61, 13 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FG, PCGS# 7664)
