Description:

1825 BD-2 Quarter Eagle, MS62
Excellent Capped Head to Left Example
1825 $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The Capped Head quarter eagles dated between 1821 and 1834 are all rare in Uncirculated grades, but especially when found with semiprooflike fields and a bold strike such as this attractive coin. The Bass-Dannreuther reference suggests 80 to 100 pieces of this die pair exist in all grades. The Guide Book estimates a total survivorship of 100 to 150 pieces for the date in all varieties and conditions. Just 4,434 pieces were originally minted.

This is a lovely, green-gold coin with some fleeting orange accents. The reflective fields show a few light abrasions, accounting for the assigned grade. The BD-2 die pairing is the most available of three varieties for the date, and shares a reverse with BD-1 (first used on the 1821 quarter eagle) typified by large A's in AMERICA and numerals of the fraction distant from the fraction bar. The BD-2 obverse displays a thick, recut flag on the 5 in the date, and the numeral is positioned awkwardly low, leaning left. The lustrous, semiprooflike fields indicate an early strike. Population: 3 in 62, 10 finer (5/14).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FG, PCGS# 7664)
