1826 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, AU55
Traditional Overdate Nomenclature
1826 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. BD-1, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, with both dies showing light clash marks. Only this one die pair is known for the 1826 quarter eagles, and the obverse has traditionally been described as an overdate. There is certainly something under the 6, but its identification remains unknown. John Dannreuther describes the variety as an 1826 over 6, and we tend to agree with his observation. The 1826 and 1827 quarter eagles have much larger stars than any previous year, and that fact provides strong evidence to rule out the overdate status of the obverse die.

Dannreuther suggests that 30 to 35 examples of this variety survive in all grades, although the actual number may be somewhat smaller, perhaps closer to two dozen. We have only offered this issue 12 times in the last 20 years, representing less than 10 distinctly different examples. The Choice AU example offered here is different from any of the others, and it is likely one of the five or six finest known examples.

A lovely 1826 quarter eagle, this specimen has distinct green color with hints of pale blue and tiny orange spots on its lemon-yellow surfaces. Both sides have satin luster with brilliant surfaces beneath the light patina. A few scattered surface marks are consistent with the grade. Here is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced early quarter eagle specialist. Population: 4 in 55, 6 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25FH, PCGS# 7665)
