Description

Choice AU 1827 Quarter Eagle
Low-Mintage Issue
BD-1, Only Known Variety

1827 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. The 1827 Capped Bust Left quarter eagle is an elusive date, with a reported mintage of just 2,800 pieces. There is a single die variety known for the date and only a single die state of the variety has been identified. The reverse die was previously used to strike quarter eagles in 1826, and it appears to have been lapped before its use in 1827. Probably no more than 45-55 examples of the 1827 quarter eagle remain extant in all grades.

The present coin displays well-detailed design elements, with some reverse detail incomplete, due to lapping. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are lustrous and lightly abraded, with no mentionable distractions. Eye appeal is quite strong for an early quarter eagle. Population: 6 in 55, 19 finer (1/13).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# BFW6, PCGS# 7666)
