1827 $2 1/2
Uncommonly Attractive 1827 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle, MS 63 PCGS1827 $2 1/2 MS 63 PCGS. The 1827 is roughly on par with the 1826 in terms of overall rarity. This is not readily evident if one were to look at the original mintage figures of these two issues. The 1826 was produced to the extent of only 760 pieces, the 1827 has an original mintage of 2,800 coins. The latter issue is the last Capped Head Left quarter eagle produced with a diameter of approximately 19 millimeters. The 1829-1834 deliveries comprised coins that measured 18.2 millimeters. This lovely Select example is just outside the Condition Census for the issue. The surfaces display a frosty, orange-gold appearance with even tan-gold overtones on the obverse. There is modest reflectivity in the fields and the devices are crisply defined throughout. Both sides are equally free of mentionable abrasions. Breen (1988) asserts that only 30-50 examples of each issue in this series are extant today.
