Description:
1830 Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS63
Well-Struck, Semiprooflike Surfaces
1830 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. CAC. Breen-6133, BD-1, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The story of the 1830 quarter eagles is a virtual carbon copy of the 1829, a low-mintage affair in this case totaling 4,540 coins -- a slight uptick from the previous year -- with but a single die pair and a single die state known, since so few examples were struck. The surfaces on this Select Mint State specimen are an even, consistent yellow-gold, with semiprooflike fields. The surfaces are well-struck if not completely so. A few small marks on Liberty's lower neck and the obverse fields nearby account for the grade but are totally undistracting. There is a shallow, irregularly shaped planchet flaw around star 1. A nice example of the Capped Head Left, Reduced Diameter subtype. Census: 4 in 63, 9 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25FL, PCGS# 7670)
