Difficult MS63 1830 Quarter Eagle1830 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6133, BD-1, R.4. The only dies for this challenging date, which is hardly a surprise given the minimal production of 4,540 pieces. Bullion depositors preferred the highest possible denomination, the half eagle, which was more convenient for international payments. The reverse die was new, and is easily identified by the widely recut U in UNITED.
This is a lustrous and unblemished Select Capped Bust quarter eagle with original and slightly dusky honey-gold toning. A pair of tiny strike-throughs near star 1 will help identify the present piece in any future auction appearances. Population: 7 in 63, 9 finer (5/08).
