1830 $2 1/2
Bright Mint State 1830 Quarter Eagle1830 MS 62 PCGS. From an original mintage of 4,540 pieces, only several dozen 1830 quarter eagles are believed to survive today. Taglione proposed a population of 75 to 85 examples, far fewer than other estimates of up to 200 pieces, and from our experience we tend to favor this lower estimate. The survival rate of this series is remarkably low, compounded by the mass meltings of this and other denominations as the intrinsic value of the coin exceeded its face value. However, that being said, the 1830 is possibly the most available issue of the Small Planchet type with a small number of near-mint and mint state pieces certified. This is a well struck example that has bright, semi-prooflike fields and is surprisingly free from abrasions. Just a hint of light rose patina graces each side of this lovely and rarely encountered gold type coin. Population: 12 in 62, only 15 finer (3/98). (NGC ID# 25FL, PCGS# 7670)
