Sharply Defined 1832 Quarter Eagle1832 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Breen-6135, BD-1, R.4. One die pair was used to strike the 4,400 quarter eagles in 1832. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) say: "In 1832, the relief on Liberty's head was made higher, resulting in generally weaker strikes and few fully struck examples." The Choice AU piece offered in the current lot exhibits above-average detail for the issue. The star centers are sharp, as is most of Liberty's hair and the eagle's plumage. Just a touch of softness is noted in the hair above Liberty's ear. Bright yellow-gold surfaces exhibit ample luster in the areas around the design elements.
