Description

1833 BD-1 Quarter Eagle, MS63
Second Rarest of the Type

1833 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. BD-1, R.5. Mintages of quarter eagles from 1821 through the first type of 1834 were so small that there are few survivors and minimal die states. The most plentiful date in that range is 1825 with 100 to 130 survivors in all grades. Only 700 to 850 examples survive for all 11 dates in that range, combined, representing two slightly different designs. For 1833, the second rarest date of the 1829 to 1834 type, John Dannreuther estimates a total population of 60 to 80 examples in all grades. Struck from perfect dies as were all, this piece shows a die line connecting the upper and lower loop of the second 3, but that is from a broken punch used to enter the digit in the die and not a die crack as some have suggested. This light yellow Select Mint State specimen has reflective fields with scattered marks as expected. The strike is a trifle weak at the centers, but overall this is an exceptional specimen. Population: 3 in 63, 5 finer (7/13).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25FP, PCGS# 7673)

If my clients were to auction something of significance, having Mike as the auctioneer would be a deal maker as far as I am concerned.
