Splendid Near-Mint 1796 Quarter, B-21796 25C AU58 PCGS. B-2, R.3. High 6. With its low mintage and first year of type status, the 1796 quarter has proven to be a popular coin with investors and collectors alike for generations. In the 1930s, Colonel Green hoarded this date and eventually acquired some 200 high grade examples, half of which were prooflike. Most of the high grade 1796 quarters that exist today are from the Green Hoard, and most all are of the High 6 (B-2) variety. (As an interesting sidenote, Green was such an extensive hoarder of so many collectibles that, after his death in 1936 it took eight armored cars to move them all). This is an attractive AU example that has semi-reflective fields. There are several field marks on each side, and the obverse striking definition is strong while the reverse displays the usual weakness on the eagle's head. Medium density gray patina covers each side with deeper accents around the peripheral devices.(#5310) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
