Description

1796 Quarter, Original Fine 12
B-1, Low 6 Variant

1796 25C Fine 12 NGC. B-1, R.4. Two obverse dies are known for the 1796 quarters, both sharing a common reverse. The B-2 or High 6 Obverse die pairing is found more frequently than the B-1 or Low 6 Obverse variety, although the 1796 quarters are seldom collected by die variety; most collectors are content to buy the nicest example they can afford for type purposes.
The B-2 or High 6 pieces are known both in the prime state of the obverse as well as with several progressive die cracks that eventually led to the replacement of the obverse die with the B-1 or Low 6 die. Coinage continued with the same reverse (AME joined on all known examples of the date). The B-2 marriage was accordingly the first use of the reverse, with the B-1 second. This excellent type example displays even wear over the high points and the expected silver-gray color. The fields and recesses are medium gray with just a hint of rose -- an unquestionably original coin. Each side is refreshingly free from abrasions.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
