Description:

1796 B-1 Quarter, VF20
First U.S. Quarter Dollar
1796 25C VF20 NGC. B-1, High R.4. A late die state specimen with a heavy die crack from the border to the top of the E in LIBERTY, eventually reaching the lower border at the digit 1. The Browning-1 die marriage is quickly recognized by the date position, with the 6 low, its top separated from the drapery and its bottom about the same distance from the border.
At one time, B-1 was considered an extremely rare variety, although recent research has located a number of different pieces. The authors of Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint provide a photographic census of 15 Mint State pieces. About 100 examples are known in all grades.
This nicely centered example has light gold and gray surfaces that deepen near the borders. Both sides have splashes of delicate blue toning. Faint hairlines are evident along side grade-consistent handling marks.
