1796 25C VG10 PCGS. B-2, R.3....
1796 B-2 Quarter Dollar, VG101796 25C VG10 PCGS. B-2, R.3. The 6 is high with its top almost touching the drapery, and that is the only diagnostic needed to recognize the variety. This lovely specimen has smooth surfaces with natural gray toning. Faint gold and lilac overtones add to its eye appeal. The importance of the 1796 quarter is twofold: It is the first year of issue for the denomination, and it is a one-year type coin with the Small Eagle reverse. It is also the only quarter dollar issued in the 18th century, with a low production of only 6,146 coins. Perhaps 10% of the mintage survives, but most are in lower grade and frequently damaged. Although the present piece has its quota of minor imperfections, it is highly attractive for the grade.
