Description:

1796 Quarter Dollar, Well-Defined XF40
Scarcer B-1 Die Pair
1796 25C XF40 NGC. B-1, R.4. B-1 is the scarcer variety with the 6 in the date approximately centered between the drapery and border (the "low 6"). 1796 quarters in any grade are the subject of avid collector demand. Although both the silver quarter and gold quarter eagles are first-year types that were introduced in 1796, the quarter is also a one-year type. No more were made until 1804, by which time the design had changed to the Draped Bust with Heraldic Eagle reverse.

Cobalt-blue, forest-green, and crimson patination gravitates to the margins of this XF specimen, being slightly more extensive and deeper on the obverse, and framing the semibright silver-gray centers. The devices display the appropriate design detail, including strong definition on Liberty's hair and facial features, the stars (except the centers), and the eagle's wing, and tail plumage. Moreover, the design elements are well-centered on the planchet and both sides exhibit strong dentilation, attributes seen on virtually all 1796 quarter dollars irrespective of grade or condition. The few light marks visible over each side are consistent with the grade and with a coin that has experienced light to moderate circulation. This piece, a representative that is missing from most collections, will make an excellent addition to a type set of early U.S. coins. Census: 4 in 40, 81 finer (12/13).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
