Description:

1796 B-2 Quarter Dollar, Minimally Marked XF40
An Important One-Year Type Coin
1796 25C XF40 PCGS. B-2, R.3. The 6 is high and nearly touches the drapery on this variety, the more frequently seen 1796 quarter. Other diagnostics are: Liberty's highest curls are under the right side of the ER in LIBERTY, the E is higher than the B, and star 15 is distant from the bust.

The 1796 quarter dollar is the second rarest silver type, trailing only the half dollars of 1796-1797, which also combine the Draped Bust and Small Eagle designs. As a one-year design type, it is necessary for the completion of a type collection of U.S. coins. But because of its relatively low mintage of 6,146 pieces and high value in all grades, it is missing from many but the most advanced type sets.

The present XF40 offering displays luminous silver-gray surfaces with well-defined design elements. Liberty's hair detail, facial features, and drapery folds are strong, as are the stars, the eagle's wing and tail feathers, and the clouds. Bold dentils show on both sides and the devices are well centered on the planchet. No adjustment marks or die cracks are visible, and the few contact marks that are present are not serious. Indeed, this is a remarkably clean specimen for a coin that has seen some circulation. We mention a minute horizontal abrasion on the right side of Liberty's chest and a diagonal one to the lower right of the ear only because they might help to identify the coin. This delightful piece of Americana will be an excellent fit for a better-grade early type collection.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
