Description:
1859 Cent Obverse Die Cap, MS66
Eagle Eye Photo Seal
1859 Cent -- Obverse Die Cap -- MS66 PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Few errors are so visually arresting as a well-preserved die cap. When a coin sticks to a die used to strike it rather than being ejected from the coining press, it will be struck again and again until it falls off or is removed. With enough impressions, the coin's metal will spread away from the central striking area and deform up around the die steel, creating a shape like a thimble or bottle cap (hence the name). In addition to showing all the classic aspects of an obverse die cap, including tall walls, a hyper-detailed obverse impression, and a strongly distorted reverse, at the MS66 grade this is one of the best-preserved 1859 cents out there, die cap or not, with the 1859 cent's status as a one-year type adding to the coin's importance. PCGS has graded 21 examples of the issue as MS66, 1 in MS66+, and none numerically finer (11/13).
Eagle Eye Photo Seal, card included.
