Description

1943-S Half Dollar, MS63, on a
Peruvian 1/2 Sol Planchet
#49 in
100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins

1943(-S) 50C Walking Liberty Half Dollar -- Struck on a Peru 1/2 Sol Planchet -- MS63 NGC. FS-101. 7.47 gm. The present coin is ranked #49 in the 2010 edition of 100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins, where it is noted that only two Walking Liberty half dollars are known struck on foreign planchets. Remarkably, the other example, a 1945-S half on an El Salvador 25 centavos planchet, is also part of the Geyer Family Collection. In 1943, the U.S. Mint struck various denominations for Peru, including the brass half sol (KM-220.3) at San Francisco. Somehow, the planchet made it between half dollar dies. The satiny sun-gold and rose-red surfaces are unabraded but display minor carbon. FS-101 exhibits die doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and the sun's rays.
