Description:
Off-Center, Struck Through
XF40 Copper-Nickel Indian Cent
Undated 1C Copper-Nickel Shield Reverse Indian Cent--Off-Center, Struck Thru--XF40 ANACS. The design subtype and alloy indicate a production date between 1860 and 1864. This cent was struck approximately 30% off center toward 7:30. The reverse between 5 and 8 o'clock was struck through a planchet fragment or other thin material. Design elements are blurry but visible throughout the strike-through. Unabraded but moderately circulated, a combination that suggests someone took notice the error and carried it as a pocket piece during the Civil War.
