1856 S-9 Flying Eagle Cent, AU581856 1C AU58 PCGS. CAC. Snow-9. A trace of friction on the eagle's breast and the crest of the front wing confirms momentary non-numismatic handling. However, the deep walnut-brown surfaces are mark-free save for a tick beneath the N in ONE. The strike is intricate and allows full definition on the veins of the cotton leaves. Though certified as a business strike within its old green label holder, S-9 is considered a proof variety by specialist Rick Snow. Examples were struck prior to the Civil War to meet demand from the increasing number of American numismatists. Until the advent of specialization in recent decades, the 1856 Flying Eagle cent was considered a passport to an advanced collection.(Registry values: N4719) (PCGS# 2013)
