Description:

1858/7 Snow-1 Cent, MS65
Condition Census Specimen
1858/7 1C MS65 PCGS. FS-301, Snow-1. Two different 1858/7 obverse dies are known, and they are identified as Fivaz-Stanton 301 and 302 (Snow-1 and Snow-7, respectively). The former, as offered here, is slightly more plentiful than the latter, but both varieties are rare and extremely popular with collectors. Early and late die states of FS-301 are known, and it is the early die states with a prominently visible overdate that collectors seek out. The later die states are recognized only by the broken wing tip between OF and AMERICA, and the lump that is centered over the first 8 in the date. That feature is sometimes described as the top of an errant 1, although a little imagination is required to make such a connection.

This impressive Gem is highly lustrous with satin surfaces and gorgeous gold surfaces. The strike is typical, with the eagle's tailfeathers indistinct, but with all other details extremely sharp in comparison. A highly attractive example, this cent ranks as one of the finest known examples and is destined for a remarkable small cent collection. Only four MS65 PCGS examples of the early die state are known, including this piece and three pieces listed in the Snow census at the Indian cent Wikipedia (indiancent.wikispaces.com). A small number of Gem late die state pieces are also known, along with a single Gem representative of FS-302. Population: 6 in 65, 0 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 2TYC, PCGS# 2022)
