Description:
1836 Gobrecht Dollar, Flashy PR58
Die Alignment I, Just a Trace of Light Toning
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Coin Alignment, Pollock-65, R.1, PR58 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment I (the center of Liberty's head is opposite the O in DOLLAR). This lovely Gobrecht lacks the diagonal die clash mark, thus placing it among the 400 dollars struck in late 1836. The fields on this lightly handled piece retain much of the original mirroring. Most likely Gobrecht dollars were struck in proof format (or something close to it by today's standards) to enhance public acceptance of the denomination which had not been struck in 32 years. Just the slightest trace of friction can be found on either side. The strike details are strong throughout, with complete detail on the foot and head of Liberty. Just the slightest gray tinge is present on each side, nowhere near enough to subdue the flashiness in the fields. There are no mentionable contact marks on either side. A wonderful type coin. (PCGS# 11225)
