Description:
Problem-Free PR45 1836 Gobrecht Dollar
Die Alignment I
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR45 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (the center of Liberty's head is opposite the DO in DOLLAR). This appears to be an early December striking, but it is impossible to say for certain as 15 points of wear may have effaced the diagnostic die scratch above the eagle that is seen on late December strikings. While effacement of the die scratch is possible but not definitive, the wear seen on each side has definitely effaced most of the reflectivity of the original proof fields. Just the faintest evidence of mirroring can still be seen around the devices. The coin is a pleasing example of this scarce and highly collectible type. The surfaces show even gray patina with a trace of underlying rose and lilac. Both obverse and reverse are essentially problem-free with the only mentionable "flaw" not really a flaw at all but an oval-shaped area of toning on the lower reverse. (PCGS# 11225)
