Description:
1836 Gobrecht Dollar, PR63
Judd-60, Die Alignment I
Deeply Toned and Nicely Reflective
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR62 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment I (the center of Liberty's head is opposite the D in DOLLAR). No trace of the linear die clash mark can be seen above the eagle's wing, indicating this was one of the first coins struck before the clashing occurred. Most Die Alignment I dollars have only moderate reflectivity in the fields, comparable to, say, an 1881-S dollar. This piece, however, displays much deeper reflectivity that usually seen, a trait that is all the more remarkable considering the depth of toning that covers each side. Deep gray, rose, and blue iridescence is seen throughout. The strike is complete on the obverse and lacks just a bit of high-point definition in the center of the eagle's breast. A shallow patch of planchet granularity in the left obverse field is the only pedigree identifier on this pleasing, deeply reflective Gobrecht dollar. (PCGS# 11225)
