Description

1836 Original Gobrecht Dollar, PR61
Judd-60, Die Alignment I, Deeply Toned

1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.5, PR61 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. No Stars Obverse, Stars Reverse. Die Alignment I (the center of Liberty's head is opposite the D in DOLLAR). The faint diagonal die scratch above the eagle's wing is readily apparent with a loupe, a sure indicator of a later December striking. This piece is mislabeled as Restrike. Restrikes are not found in Die Alignment I. Each side is deeply toned in charcoal gray with a thin outline of golden around the devices. The surfaces are so deeply patinated that the shallow mirroring in the fields is almost completely subdued (but this same depth of color also subdues the light hairlines). The strike details are complete in all areas, even including full detail on Liberty's foot.
