Description:
Richly Toned 1836 Gobrecht Dollar, PR62
Die Alignment II, Judd-60 Restrike
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR62 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment II (Center of Liberty's head opposite ES in STATES). Medallic alignment. The unintentional die scratch is evident on the reverse above the eagle's wing and points toward AT in STATES. This die scratch has been used for 20 or so years to help distinguish the striking periods on the coins in this confusing series. It is generally accepted that the scratch occurred in late 1836. Then, when the 1836-dated coins were struck in March 1837 they had both a medallic alignment and the faint die scratch.
The surfaces on this piece are reflective, as one would expect, and this helps brighten the deep blue, rose, and gray iridescent toning. The strike is sharp overall, and the only marks of any note are located in the reverse field close to the eagle's tail feathers. (PCGS# 11227)
