Description:
Finest Known Gem Proof 1836 Judd-60 Restrike (Or "Second Original")
1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR65 PCGS. Die Alignment IV. Plain Edge. Silver. Rarity-1. On this piece, the eagle flies level after a medallic turn, unlike the Judd-60 Originals, where the eagle flies upward. This coin technically should be classed a restrike as it was struck in March 1837, although it is dated 1836. Another way of referring to it is as a "second original" (with the "first originals" struck in December 1836, but these are found in Die Alignment I). Since all the Gobrecht dollars that were struck in 1837 (600 pieces) were deposited with the Bank of the United States for public distribution, most of the Judd-60 Restrikes (or "Second Originals") are found today in circulated condition with very few known in high grades. This piece is the finest example known to either of the major grading services. The fields are bright and highly reflective and each side has lovely gray-rose coloration with sea-green accents around the margins. There are no obvious or even mentionable contact marks on either side of this splendid Gem proof. (#11227) (PCGS# 11227)
