Description

1839 Gobrecht Dollar, PR58
Highly Attractive Judd-104 Restrike

1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR58 NGC. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (head of Liberty opposite the O in OF). The coin can be determined as a restrike by the microscopic die cracks through the tops of MERI and TE. Originals, such as the one in the Smithsonian, were struck in 1839 and lack these cracks. The restrikes are believed to have been produced between 1857 and 1859. The fields are nicely mirrored, with a finish comparable to proof Seated dollars struck in the late 1850s. The PR58 grade indicates some slight friction over the high points, but it will be difficult to see loss of detail there. The only signs of handling we see is "fuzziness" in the fields from a short time in the channels of commerce (or an extended stay in someone's pocket). Each side has light, lovely gray-blue toning. (PCGS# 11446)
