1849-C Closed Wreath Gold Dollar
Attractive MS62+
First North Carolina Federal Issue

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath MS62+ NGC. Variety 1. The first-year Charlotte gold dollars were struck in the moderate amount of 11,634 pieces but, fortunately, some nice examples have been preserved. Due to the efforts of the Bechtler family in Rutherford County, North Carolina, gold dollars had circulated in the Southeast since the early 1830s. So even though the Charlotte Mint was established in 1838, the facility would strike its gold dollars only 11 years later, in 1849, the year the smallest gold denomination was introduced at the federal level. The smaller face value of the gold dollar, compared to the quarter eagles and half eagles that Charlotte had previously struck, made the first-year 1849-C dollars more likely to be "put back" as souvenirs of the new denomination. The present MS62+ example is quite clean for the grade, with surfaces that show a well-matched appearance front to back -- something that cannot be said for many examples of the issue, as the obverse die is convex and more likely to show contact marks and strike weakness. While a few thin scrapes and small ticks do show in the lower-right obverse quadrant near the rim, note how well the hair below the coronet is struck. The reverse is nicer overall, however, and boldly struck for the issue. Attractive medium yellow-gold color deepens toward the rims. Census: 9 in 62 (1 in 62+), 8 finer (2/13).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2008), lot 803.
