Description

1849-C Closed Wreath Gold Dollar, MS64
One of the Finest Known

1849-C G$1 Closed Wreath MS64 NGC. Variety 1. The obverse is semiprooflike with lovely, natural rich orange-gold color. Some ticks in the fields are accented by the depth of the reflectiveness and the most noticeable are located in the right field. A scratch from the star at 4 o'clock up into the field is mentioned mostly for identification purposes. The reverse is frostier with choice surfaces and slightly less intense coloration. This coin is well-struck, vibrant, and fresh with a wholesome and pleasing overall appearance. In fact, it is among the best looking 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollars this cataloger has ever seen, and it certainly qualifies as a Condition Census example.
The 1849-C Closed Wreath is the only collectible dollar struck at Charlotte and it is popular as a first year of issue. It is tied for the fourth rarest Type One dollar from this mint and is the sixth rarest of nine issues in higher grades. Of the 200-300+ known in all grades around a dozen to 15 exist in Uncirculated. This is one of just two graded by either service in MS64 (both by NGC) with none graded higher.
Ex: February Signature (Heritage 2/2010), lot 1360, where it realized $34,500. This is, by far, an auction record for this date.
