1849-D G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 1-A....
1849-D Gold Dollar, Well-Produced MS641849-D G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 1-A. Mintmark left of bow center, the more commonly seen of the two reverse dies. All known are of the Open Wreath subtype, unlike the 1849-C which is known from a handful of the extremely rare Closed Wreath pieces. Dahlonega made a complement about twice as large as Charlotte in 1849, 21,588 pieces, and the 1849-D is today the most available Dahlonega gold dollar in Mint State, saved in greater numbers due to its first-year status. This is an exceedingly well-produced example, highly lustrous with medium yellow-gold surfaces that are uniformly well-struck. A couple of tiny marks on the lower obverse appear to define the grade, yet they are far from overt. Census: 8 in 64, 1 finer (2/13).
