Description:
Uncirculated 1850-C Gold Dollar
Ex: Bass, Ashland City
1850-C G$1 MS61 NGC. The 1850-C is the second rarest collectible Charlotte Mint gold dollar. Only 6,966 examples were produced from a single pair of dies. There are around 200 or so known in all grades. There are probably fewer than 10 pieces known in full Mint State and none of these appear to grade higher than MS62 to MS63. The obverse is slightly prooflike with pale green color and the fields show scattered ticks with some light friction seen on the high spots. The reverse is frostier in texture with fewer marks and less friction. The strike is sharp and crisp with better detail than usual for the date. A nice, affordable example of this rare issue with an excellent pedigree.
Purchased by Harry Bass from Julian Leidman on May 30, 1972; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 13, where it realized $4,830; Ashland City Collection (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 4611.
