Description

Low-Mintage 1850-C Gold Dollar, MS62
Only One Finer Coin at PCGS

1850-C G$1 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1. Only 6,966 gold dollars were struck at the Charlotte Mint in 1850, and it seems certain that none were saved for numismatic purposes. This issue is one of the rarest of the series, probably tied with the 1859-C as the second-rarest Charlotte gold dollar. No more than 150-250 specimens are extant today in all grades, with most examples seen in the VF-XF range. Mint State pieces are very rare.

The present coin is a remarkable MS62 example, with an attractive mixed patina of orange, green, and rose-gold hues. The design elements are well-detailed, much sharper than usually seen on this issue, with just a touch of weakness on the date and ribbon bow. The pleasing surfaces show prooflike reflectivity in many areas, with exceptional eye appeal. Population: 5 in 62, 1 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25BG, PCGS# 7510)
