Description:
1855-C Gold Dollar, AU58
Scarcer Variety 1
1855-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Two varieties are now known of the 1855-C; this is the rarer one with the 5 in the date centered under the A. The second variety has the final 5 to the right below the A in DOLLAR. The second variety usually also has the digit 8 sharply defined. Predictably, the 8 is weak on this piece.
This piece is just a bit weak at the centers but overall is a superior example of this popular one-year type with virtually perfect surfaces below rich natural orange-gold color. As nearly every known 1855-C gold dollar has been cleaned or dipped at one time, the collector who appreciates originality should pay careful attention to this coin.
Ex: North Georgia Collection (Heritage, 1/1999), lot 7731; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 3047, where it brought $20,765.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25C5, PCGS# 7533)
