Description:
Mint State 1855-C Gold Dollar
Only Type Two C-Mint Issue
1855-C G$1 MS60 NGC. Variety 1. The 1855-C is the only Type Two gold dollar from the Charlotte Mint, with a small mintage of 9,803 pieces. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 250-350 examples in all grades, but the issue is very rare in Mint State. Quality control was not a priority when the coins were produced and many examples were struck on rough or faulty planchets. Striking problems were common with the Type Two design, especially with the 1855-C, which is never seen with sharp details. As a result of these circumstances, the 1855-C is the second rarest Charlotte gold dollar in high grade, behind only the virtually uncollectible 1849-C Open Wreath.

The present coin is an attractive specimen for this issue. The peripheral details are fairly sharp, but the centers show the typical softness always seen on the 1855-C. The central reverse shows an area of surface roughness at the exact center of the coin, obliterating the LL in DOLLAR. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces display partially prooflike luster, with only minor contact marks. This coin represents the rare Variety 1, with the 5 centered under the A in DOLLAR. The 1855-C is avidly sought-after by date and type collectors alike. Census: 3 in 60, 11 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25C5, PCGS# 7533)
