Description

1855 Gold Dollar, MS64
Excellent Type Two Representative

1855 G$1 MS64 PCGS. From a business-strike mintage of 758,269 pieces, the 1855 gold dollar is always in demand as representative of the short-lived Type Two design. The Type One gold dollars were struck on small planchets and were easily lost in pockets, purses, etc. Seeking to alleviate these problems, the Type Two coins were struck on larger diameter planchets than the Type One dollars, with decreased thickness to keep the amount of gold the same. Unfortunately, the thin planchets caused many striking problems because there was not enough metal to flow into the high points of the design when the coins were struck. Wear and tear on the dies was also excessive. The Type Two design was modified after 1855, although a small mintage of this type was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1856, creating one of the most popular short-lived design types in the U.S. gold series.

The present coin is an attractive Choice example, with lustrous greenish-gold surfaces that show a few highlights of rose and lilac. The design elements are sharply detailed for a Type Two and the surfaces show only a few minor contact marks. Visual appeal is quite strong.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 25C4, PCGS# 7532)
