Description:

1856-S Gold Dollar, MS64
Sole 1856 Issue With Type Two Design
1856-S G$1 Type Two MS64 NGC. CAC. Normal S. The 1856-S is a challenging issue among Type Two gold dollars, even more so than the 1855-O, as the low mintage of 24,600 pieces would suggest. In 1856 only the San Francisco mint produced gold dollars with this design, because Mint Director Col. James Ross Snowden initiated redesign of the gold dollars to the Type Three format after the San Francisco dies had been shipped west in 1855. The lack of an 1856 issue from any other mint gives this issue a certain cachet with collectors of gold type. Akers' reference on gold dollars lists this date as "very rare." The 1856-S is among the best produced of all Type Two dollars, and the present example is an excellent representative of both the date and the type. It shows no clash marks and only light central weakness, on the obverse chiefly confined to Liberty's high point hair and the faint LIBERTY, while even the headdress tips are pleasingly bold. The reverse shows considerable contrast between the mirrored fields and frosty devices. DOLLAR and the date are bold, even if the double L's and the 8 are slightly soft. The 6 in the date is repunched north. Perusal with a glass reveals only a few miscellaneous ticks on this lustrous, unsurpassable coin. A superior choice for the finest type or date set. Census: 4 in 64, 0 finer (1/13).
