Description:
Choice AU 1859-C Gold Dollar
Planchet Defect on Reverse
1859-C G$1 -- Defective Planchet Reverse -- AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. Only 5,235 pieces were produced of the 1859-C gold dollar, the lowest mintage in the entire C-mint gold dollar series, except for the extremely rare 1849-C Open Wreath. Glimpses of mint luster remain around the devices and rims of this AU55 coin. The strike is weak, as always. On the reverse, a small but deep vertical planchet defect runs from the bottom of the 1 in the denomination to just above the 8 in the date. This error is an unusual feature on any gold coin, and it is especially difficult to locate an error of any type on a Charlotte product. An unusual and worthwhile coin for the Southern gold or error specialist.
Ex: Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 3/2005), lot 6819, which realized $4,025.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 25CM, PCGS# 7552)
